Anthropic API key and spend limits for a hosted bot

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerSign in to the Anthropic Console, go to Settings then API keys, click Create key, name it, set an expiration and copy it once. Set spend limits under Billing, or per workspace, and note API usage is paid mainly with prepaid credits.

From Anthropic's documentation, checked October 18, 2026.

Create a key

  1. Sign in at platform.claude.com.
  2. Go to Settings, then API keys.
  3. Click Create key; name it, choose an expiration and choose the linked account (yourself or a service account).
  4. Copy the key (it starts with sk-ant-). It is shown only once.

If the Create key button is disabled your role does not allow it. Personal and service-account keys stop working if their owner leaves the organization.

Spend limits

How you pay

Anthropic says API usage is mainly paid with prepaid credits bought in the Console. Failed requests are not charged, access stops when credits run out unless auto-reload is set, credits expire after one year and purchases are non-refundable.

Need your GPT running again without ChatGPT?

GPT Migrator can host your instructions and files as a standalone chat page for $47 per month. You bring your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key. It answers from your instructions and files and does not run GPT Actions.
