API rate limits and usage tiers explained

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerBoth providers limit requests and tokens per minute and group accounts into tiers that rise with usage or purchases. New accounts start with low limits, so a busy public bot may need a higher tier.

From the providers' rate-limit documentation, checked October 18, 2026. Numbers change; read the live pages.

Limits are measured in requests, tokens and images per minute or day, whichever you hit first, vary by model and are set per organization and project. Tiers are earned by cumulative credit purchases: Free, Build ($5 total purchases, $500 monthly limit), Launch ($100, $5,000) and Grow ($500, $200,000).

Anthropic

Limits are requests per minute and input and output tokens per minute per model class, with tiers Evaluation, Start, Build, Scale and Custom placed automatically by usage and account standing. You can request an increase in the Console. Monthly spend caps by tier are $500, $1,000 and $200,000 for Start, Build and Scale. Workspace limits can be set lower than the organization's.
