Migrating GPT Actions: what happens to your API calls

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerOpenAI says custom actions do not transfer when you migrate to a plugin. Inventory every endpoint, schema and authentication method, then rebuild using a supported app or a custom MCP server, and test each call.

Why Actions are the hard part

Instructions and files are text. Actions are working connections: a schema, a server URL and authentication. OpenAI's migration guide states that custom actions do not transfer and must be rebuilt separately, using a supported app or a custom MCP server.

Step 1: Inventory

For each Action write down: the endpoint and method, what it returns, the server URL, the authentication type, and which line of your instructions tells the GPT when to call it. The free checker lists endpoints, servers and auth from a pasted OpenAPI schema.

Step 2: Decide how to reconnect

Step 3: Re-authorize and test

OAuth connections usually need to be authorized again. Test each call end to end, including error cases.

GPT Migrator hosting does not run Actions. Our hosted bots answer from instructions and files only. If your GPT depends on Actions, use the plugin path or a custom build; see rebuilding with the OpenAI API.

Not sure it is simple enough to do yourself?

Tell us what your GPT does, whether it uses Actions and how many files it has. We will say what will break and what a rebuild involves. The audit is free.
