Short answerGoogle says there is no one-click conversion: download the Gem's knowledge files, create a skill manually with the same name, description and instructions, add your files and upload it. Skills need a SKILL.md at the root and exclude DOCX and XLSX.
Requirements
- Signed in, 18 or older, Keep Activity turned on.
- Create from gemini.google.com under Customize, then Skills, or upload an existing one.
Google's manual steps for a Gem
- Download the Gem's knowledge files into a folder named after the skill.
- In Settings, create a skill manually and paste the Gem's name, description and instructions.
- Download the skill zip, put your SKILL.md and files in your folder, and use Replace skill to upload it.
Upload rules
- SKILL.md in the root; name in lowercase with hyphens; up to 100 MB total.
- Supported: TXT, MD, RST, RTF, JSON, YAML, CSV, XML, HTML, PDF, images and common code files.
- Not supported: DOCX, DOC, XLSX and other binaries. Convert first.
- Scripts cannot use the internet. Editing means re-uploading the whole skill.
Dates: Gems transition to skills from November 2026 for personal accounts: Gemini overview. The same SKILL.md format works elsewhere: convert a GPT, the standard.
