How to shorten long Custom GPT instructions

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerLong instructions cost money on every message and bury important rules. Move facts to knowledge files, delete repeats and ChatGPT-specific lines, structure what remains and retest.

Steps

  1. Copy a baseline and run your test prompts so you can compare.
  2. Move facts out. Prices, policies and lists belong in knowledge files, not instructions.
  3. Delete duplicates and contradictory rules.
  4. Remove obsolete lines about ChatGPT-only features: rewrite guide.
  5. Restructure with the template.
  6. Retest and keep what still passes.

Why it matters

Instructions are sent with every message, so length affects cost (tokens) and leaves less room for files (context window).
