Short answerKeep the original GPT usable as long as possible, version your instructions and files, run both side by side, and set clear criteria for switching back. Note that after OpenAI's migration the original becomes read-only.
Keep the old version available
OpenAI says the original GPT stays usable until retirement after you migrate, but becomes read-only. That gives you a fallback for users, but not for edits; make edits in the new version.
Version everything
- Save instructions as dated text files.
- Keep a folder of the exact knowledge files uploaded.
- Save Action schemas.
Switch-back criteria
Decide in advance what failure looks like: accuracy below your threshold on the test set, a broken Action, or user complaints above a level.
Run in parallel
- Soft launch to a small group.
- Compare results for a week.
- Move everyone and announce: announcement template.
If the original has already retired, the rollback is your backup: missed deadline guide.
Not sure it is simple enough to do yourself?
