GPT Migrator
Troubleshooting, testing and FAQs

What if you miss the Custom GPT retirement deadline?

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerOpenAI says Custom GPTs stop running at retirement. Its migration guide says a GPT can still be migrated afterward but will not run, and reports say existing conversations stay accessible. Do not rely on that: back up now.

What is known

OpenAI's FAQ lists December 11, 2026 as the planned date when custom GPTs stop running. OpenAI's migration guide says a GPT can still be migrated after retirement, even though it will not run, and a summary of the FAQ says existing conversations stay accessible. We found no promise that your instructions and files can be exported by hand afterward, so do not count on it.

If you are before the date

Do the minimum now: copy instructions, gather files, then migrate the most important GPT first. See the countdown plan.

If you are after it

  1. Try Migrate to plugin first: per OpenAI's guide it can still work after retirement (requirements).
  2. Look for any copy of your instructions: notes, emails, drafts (recovery guide).
  3. Find original files.
  4. Rebuild from saved good answers and test.
  5. Ask for a free audit if the bot is business-critical.

Not sure it is simple enough to do yourself?

Tell us what your GPT does, whether it uses Actions and how many files it has. We will say what will break and what a rebuild involves. The audit is free.
