Short answerLook for the original in your own notes and drafts first. If the GPT is still open to you, try the free extension or copy the instructions field. If nothing works, rebuild from the GPT's behavior and test it against saved answers.

Places to look
- Your notes app, documents or the chat where you first drafted the instructions.
- Email or messages sent to a teammate or client describing the GPT.
- The GPT's description and conversation starters, which often summarize its job.
If the GPT is still accessible to you
Open it as the creator and look at its configuration. If you cannot see it, try the free Chrome extension, which reads the GPT through your own login and downloads what it can.
What about extracting it by asking the GPT?
Many GPTs are written to keep their instructions private, and asking a bot to recite its instructions is unreliable. We do not recommend it as a backup method. It may produce a paraphrase, not your actual text.
Rebuild from behavior
- Collect 10 to 20 real conversations or test questions with answers you liked.
- Write a new instruction that describes the role, tone, rules and format those answers share.
- Run the questions and compare. Adjust until answers match.
Use the testing scorecard to judge the result, and save the final text somewhere safe.
Export your GPT with one click
The free Chrome extension reads the GPT you have open in ChatGPT and downloads a zip with its instructions and, where ChatGPT allows it, its knowledge files.
