How to export your Custom GPT instructions

Short answerOpen your GPT, copy the Instructions field into a text file, and save the description and conversation starters too. The free GPT Migrator Chrome extension can do this for you and package it as a zip.

Option 1: Copy by hand

  1. Open ChatGPT and go to your GPTs.
  2. Open the GPT you created.
  3. Copy the instructions into a plain text file.
  4. Also copy the name, description, conversation starters and note which capabilities are on.
  5. Save the file outside ChatGPT, for example in a cloud drive.
ChatGPT's screens change. If you cannot find an instructions field in your account, see recovering a system prompt.

Option 2: Use the free Chrome extension

The GPT Migrator extension uses your own ChatGPT login to read the GPT you have open or pick from, and downloads a zip containing instructions.md, gpt.json and a knowledge folder when files can be read. It runs in your browser and does not send your data to us. It relies on ChatGPT's internal pages, which can change, so keep a manual backup too.

Check the copy

Paste the instructions into the free checker to see the word count and flags such as browsing, image generation or file references that need a decision on your new platform.

Next

Back up your knowledge files, then follow the checklist.

Export your GPT with one click

The free Chrome extension reads the GPT you have open in ChatGPT and downloads a zip with its instructions and, where ChatGPT allows it, its knowledge files.
