Custom GPT migration mistakes to avoid

Last checked October 18, 2026
Short answerThe big ones: not backing up instructions and files, assuming Actions will transfer, editing the original after migrating (it is read-only), skipping tests, and forgetting to tell users where the new version lives.
On this page

1. No backup

Save your instructions and original files before you do anything. See exporting instructions.

2. Assuming Actions transfer

OpenAI states custom actions do not transfer through its migration. Plan their rebuild: Actions migration.

3. Editing after you migrate

After migration the original becomes read-only, so finish edits first and make later changes in the new version.

4. Assuming the same model and behavior

The selected model and capability settings do not carry over reliably, so answers can differ. Test with real questions.

5. Forgetting sharing and permissions

For plugins you need permission to share, and recipients install them. Check access before announcing.

6. Moving outdated files

Migration is the time to remove old material. Do not carry stale files forward.

7. No announcement

Update links, onboarding and saved resources so users find the new version.
