The timeline OpenAI published
OpenAI's Custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ describes these planned dates for Enterprise workspaces:
| Date | What it marks |
|---|---|
| September 11, 2026 | Admin notice |
| September 17, 2026 | Migration target |
| September 25, 2026 | Creation of new Custom GPTs ends (planned) |
| December 11, 2026 | Scheduled retirement: Custom GPTs stop running |
What happens before retirement
According to the FAQ, existing GPTs remain usable until the retirement date, subject to their existing access and workspace permissions. After you migrate a GPT, the original stays usable until retirement but becomes read-only, so finish essential edits first.
What OpenAI wants you to move to
OpenAI encourages users to consider plugins as replacements and says it plans to help users migrate GPTs to plugins. See how the plugin migration works and how plugins differ from GPTs.
What to do now
- Decide whether you need the GPT at all after the date.
- Save your instructions and files: instructions, knowledge files.
- Work through the checklist.
