Short answerIn ChatGPT go to Settings, Data controls, Export data. OpenAI emails a download link; it can take up to 7 days and the link expires after 24 hours. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces cannot self-export.
Steps
- Open your profile menu, then Settings, then Data controls.
- Click Export data, then Export, and confirm.
- Wait for OpenAI's email (it can take up to 7 days) and download within 24 hours.
- Sign in to the same account to download.
- Self-service export is not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces; contact the workspace owner.
- Deleted chats are not recoverable and are not in the export.
What it does not solve
We found no official statement that the export includes a GPT's instructions or knowledge files, or that it includes conversations with custom GPTs. Treat it as a backup of your chats, not of your GPT. To save the GPT itself, see exporting instructions and files. Chat history may not copy during migration: conversation history.
