Short answerPer OpenAI's guide, using someone else's GPT is not enough to migrate it: you must be the creator or a workspace owner or admin. If you are only a user, ask the creator, or rebuild your own version from what you are allowed to know.
What OpenAI requires
The migration guide lists these requirements: you are the GPT's creator or a workspace owner or admin, the GPT is published and plugins are enabled for you. Shared access alone is not enough.
Your options
- Ask the creator to migrate it and share the plugin with you (sharing steps).
- Ask a workspace admin if it belongs to your organization.
- Build your own assistant for your own needs with your own instructions and files. Do not copy someone else's private instructions or files without permission.
If you are the creator but cannot find the button
See common reasons.
Respect the original builder's rights and your agreements with them. For a business that relies on a GPT it does not own, talk to the owner now, because it stops running at retirement: dates.
Check your GPT before you move it
Paste your instructions, file names and Actions schema into the free checker. It runs in your browser and builds a portable bundle. Nothing is uploaded.
