Short answerList every GPT, then for each save the instructions, descriptions, starters and original files in a dated folder. The free extension can speed this up. Verify each backup by opening it.
Process
- Open My GPTs and list every GPT you created in a sheet (inventory).
- For each, export the instructions: copy by hand or use the Chrome extension.
- Gather the original files (file backup).
- Save the description, starters and Action schemas.
- Put everything in a folder named
gpt-name-YYYY-MM-DD. - Store a second copy in another place.
Verify
- Open each saved file; confirm it is complete and readable.
- Paste the instructions into the checker to see that the word count looks right.
Why now
OpenAI plans to retire Custom GPTs; see dates. Backups cost minutes and protect you if a migration goes wrong: rollback plan.
Export your GPT with one click
The free Chrome extension reads the GPT you have open in ChatGPT and downloads a zip with its instructions and, where ChatGPT allows it, its knowledge files.
