What a Claude Project is
Anthropic describes projects as self-contained workspaces with their own chat history and knowledge base. Each project can have custom instructions that shape responses, such as tone or a professional role, and you can upload documents and other files as project knowledge. Projects are available to all users, including free accounts, which are limited to five projects. On paid plans Claude switches to retrieval when knowledge nears context limits, and on Team and Enterprise plans you can share projects with members.
Steps
- Export your instructions and gather your files.
- In Claude, create a new project and give it your GPT's name.
- Paste your instructions into the project's custom instructions.
- Upload your knowledge files as project knowledge. Anthropic's article does not list supported file types or size limits, so check the current help center and convert unusual formats to PDF, DOCX or text.
- Test with your saved questions: testing guide.
- Share the project with teammates if your plan allows.
What does not carry over
- GPT Actions: a project does not run them. See Actions migration.
- ChatGPT-only features and the original model's behavior. Claude will answer differently, so expect to tune the instructions.
- Public sharing as a standalone bot. A project is a workspace, not a public page. For that, see hosting outside ChatGPT.
GPT Migrator can also host your bot using an Anthropic API key you provide, as an alternative to a Project.
Export your GPT with one click
The free Chrome extension reads the GPT you have open in ChatGPT and downloads a zip with its instructions and, where ChatGPT allows it, its knowledge files.
